Memorable Manitobans: Glenn Armstrong Kreutzer (1942-2007)

Beekeeper.

Born at Winnipeg on 2 October 1942 to Henry M. Kreutzer (1905-1985) and Marguerite Kreutzer (1911-1999), he attended school in Selkirk. In 1967 he married Pauline Marie Osterman (1944-1975), with whom he went on to have one child. He started a bee-keeping business in Amaranth in 1965 and attained a diploma in bee keeping from the University of Manitoba in 1970. In 1974 he relocated the headquarters of Kreutzer Honey Farms to Portage la Prairie.

In 1988 he wound down the operations of the bee business to pursue his real estate interests, but remained heavily involved in the bee business, eventually becoming the President of the Manitoba Bee Keepers Association (MBA) in 1982-1983. In 2006 he was honoured with the Bee Hive Award by the MBA for his 25 years of service (1965-1985) as a Director of the board. His wife Pauline had also been a Director of the board (1973-1975), the only time in MBA history that a husband and wife had ever served on the board together. He was a Director of the Manitoba Honey Co-op and Bee Maid Honey for 15 years in the 1970s and 1980s, a member of the Canadian Honey Council (1974-1984), secretary-manager of the Manitoba Honey Marketing Board (1968-1982), and named chair of that board in 1983. In 1976 he was named a Director of the Canadian Federal Agriculture Board. In 1977 the Rotary Club of Manitoba honoured him as one of its five Young Outstanding Manitobans. He was a member of the Portage Kiwanis Club for fifteen years and served as club President (1978-1979).

Besides being involved with various organizations, he enjoyed travelling throughout Canada and the United States and riding his motorcycles. He was also a collector of different items, with his most prominent one being Coca-Cola memorabilia.

He died at Portage la Prairie on 31 July 2007 and was buried in the Hillside Cemetery.
