Indigenous leader.
Born on his father's trapline on Lake of the Woods in 1936, he attended the St. Mary's Residential School to grade 8, later continuing his education at the Coady International Institute at St. Francis Xavier University and University of Manitoba (BA). He served as the Grand Chief of Grand Council Treaty 3 (1972-1975, 1991-1995), was the first Ontario regional chief for the Assembly of First Nations, and served several terms as Chief of the Ojibways of Onigaming. He and wife Kathi had seven children, including Wabanakwut “Wab” Kinew. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Winnipeg (2011). He died on 23 December 2012.
