Memorable Manitobans: Mark Ki (1883-1957)

Grocer, community activist.

Born in China on 19 February 1883, he arrived in Morden around 1918 and worked as a grocer. He became known in the community for the “quiet, unostentatious doing of good deeds.” These deeds characterized his residency and included such acts as paying a sick debtors bill and lending the local hospital money to pay employees during the Great Depression. He was honoured by receiving the community’s annual citizenship award in 1948. The Citizen Shield and plaque were presented in a ceremony held by the Morden Kinsmen Club.

He was a member of the Freemason’s hospital board of Morden. He was also a president and honorary life member of this organization. His and his wife Mark Chin (?-?) shared one son, Hon Koon (Bill) and one daughter, Mrs. Ham Ham.

He died at Winnipeg on 4 March 1957 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
