Memorable Manitobans: Joseph Jones (1881-1970)

Cleric, educator.

Born at Littleborough, Lancashire, England on 14 April 1881, son of Edward Jones, he came to Canada in 1903 and received a degree in Theology from Wesley College. He was an Indian Agent at Norway House when, in 1916, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served with the Canadian Army. After the First World War, he farmed at Leask, Saskatchewan before being appointed Principal of the Norway House Residential School (1920s), which he designed, and later Principal of the Portage la Prairie Residential School (1935-1942, 1946-1949). In 1949, he retired and moved to Victoria, British Columbia.

On 8 August 1914, he married Florence Consterdine (1882-1988) at Winnipeg and they had five children: Philip Consterdine Jones (1915-1942), Joseph Bruce Jones (1917-?), Florence Marguerite Jones (1919-?), Katherine Jones (?-?, wife of Percy Herbert Mallett), ? Jones (wife of Robert Nicholson), and ? Jones (wife of Geoffrey Cue).

He died at Victoria, British Columbia on 30 November 1970.
