Memorable Manitobans: Harold Jantz (1937-2024)

Writer, editor, publisher.

Born at Laird, Saskatchewan on 8 January 1937, one of seven children of Henry and Lena Jantz, in 1947 the family moved to a fruit farm at Virgil, Ontario. While studying at the Mennonite Brethren Bible College in Winnipeg, he met and married Neoma Hinz. He taught at Virgil for three years then they returned to Winnipeg and had three daughters.

He was editor of the Mennonite Brethren Herald magazine for two decades and was the founding publisher of ChristianWeek, a national evangelical newspaper, leading it for a decade. He contributed articles to the Winnipeg Free Press. His 2011 book, Leaders Who Shaped Us: Canadian Mennonite Brethren 1910-2010, received a Manitoba Day Award from the Association for Manitoba Archives.

He died at Winnipeg on 7 February 2024 and was buried in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
