Memorable Manitobans: Charles Cecil Irvine (1881-1945)

Railwayman, plant manager.

Born at Stratford, Ontario on 14 July 1881, he came to western Canada in 1898 and held a secretarial position with the Great Northern Railway. From 1900 to 1910, he worked for the firm of McKenzie and Mann on construction of the Canadian Northern Railway. He left railroading in 1918 to work for the Spanish River Pulp and Paper Company at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, as secretary to Colonel C. H. L. Jones. In 1925, he began working on the Manitoba Paper Company project organized by John Duncan McArthur and moved to the new town of Pine Falls to become the plant’s manager. He held the position to the end of his life.

He and wife Muriel D. ? (1882-1961) had five children: James Irvine, John Cecil Irvine (1916-1983), William Irvine, Mary Irvine (wife of ? Hamlin), and Catherine Irvine (wife of ? Douglas).

He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 24 December 1945 and was buried in the Pine Falls Community Cemetery. The honorary pallbearers were Wesley McCurdy, Richard Lippincott Denison, Richard Jackson, E. H. Smith, William Henry Carter, Maurice Clark Gilman, Edwin Victor Caton, William Parker Fillmore, Charles Campbell, and Dr. William Creighton.
