Memorable Manitobans: Gordon William Holland (1929-2024)

Business executive.

Born at Harvey Station, New Brunswick on 28 July 1929, son of William Jamieson Holland (c1908-1985) and Virginia Almira Paterson (c1907-1972), the family moved to Winnipeg around 1945. He attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate and the University of Manitoba, received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the latter.

In 1951, he began working at Great West Life, later moving to Manitoba Blue Cross. He was Executive Director and later Chairman of the Manitoba Hospital Commission (1958-1968). In 1968, he joined the provincial civil service as Secretary of the Management Committee of Cabinet. He was President, CEO, and Board Chairman of the Manitoba Telephone System (1974-1986) and served on the boards of the Trans-Canada Telephone System and Telesat. In 1988, he purchased a franchise business that he operated until 2009.

On 4 September 1954, he married Sandra Diane Stuart (1934-2001) and they had three children. He was a member of Harrow United Church, Kiwanis Club of South Winnipeg (President), Chairman of the Building Committee for Fred Douglas Lodge, Board Member and Campaign Chairman for the United Way of Winnipeg (1983), and a Board member of the St. Boniface Hospital. He was Board Chairman of the Manitoba Health Organization (1980-1990) and a Board member of the Manitoba Medical Services Foundation (1981-2015).

He died at the Grace Hospital on 29 July 2024.
