Memorable Manitobans: Terrence Patrick “Terry” Hogan (1937-2007)

Psychologist, administrator.

Born at Dubuque, Iowa on 10 May 1937 to Clarissa Elizabeth Theis (1912-1977) and Clement Joseph Hogan (1905-1978), he earned a BA degree at Loras College, then continued his studies at the Catholic University of America at Washington DC, where he received MA and PhD degrees in Psychology. After receiving his doctorate, he worked with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Clinton, Iowa, taught at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, and provided services at the Marshfield Clinic in Marshfield, Wisconsin.

In 1963, he married Elizabeth Anne Gonner (1940-1992) and they went on to have five children. In 1969 the family moved to Winnipeg, where he took the post of Professor of Psychology at the University of Manitoba. During his thirty-five years there, he held numerous positions, including Associate Head of Psychology, Associate Dean of Arts, Dean of Graduate Studies, Associate Vice President (Academic), and Vice President (Research and External Relations). He ended his academic career as Executive Associate Dean of the Asper School of Business and as its Director of International Student Exchanges. He was a Senior Scholar at the time of his death.

Throughout his career he was a member of many organizations and served as President of the Canadian Psychological Association, Psychological Association of Manitoba, and Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education. The Canadian Psychological Association named him as the 2001 Member of the Year. He also sat on the boards of several national, international, and local organizations, and served for many years on the Board of Governors for the University College Sedaya International in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In recognition of his service and contribution he was granted an Honorary Doctorate from UCSI (2006).

He was proud of his Irish heritage and enjoyed all things Irish. He also enjoyed travel, exotic foods, music, and telling stories to his family and friends around the dinner table.

He died at Winnipeg on 19 September 2007.
