Memorable Manitobans: Margaret Frances Jackson Hobbs (1909-1997)

Educator, politician.

Born at Berwick, Ontario on 15 March 1909, daughter of Elizabeth Mitchell (?-?) and John Archibald Jackson (1880-1962), she grew up in Manitoba, attended Oakhurst School, Minitonas School (for high school grades), and Brandon Normal School (1929). She taught at North Polsen School (1929-1930), Meleb School (1930-1935; Principal 1932-1935), and The Pas School (1935-1936).

On 30 December 1936, she married 6½-feet-tall locomotive engineer George “Tiny” Hobbs (1907-1962) at The Pas. They had a daughter and the family moved to Revelstoke, British Columbia in 1950. She and George were active with the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation in Manitoba and BC, and George was elected as a member of the BC Legislative Assembly for Revelstoke (1960-1962).

In 1956, her father moved to Revelstoke and, following his death on 27 January 1962, she was escorting his body back to Ontario via train when received news of her husband's death on 30 January. She ran for provincial office in the 1962 By-Election for Revelstoke and won George’s former seat, serving as MLA (1962-1963). She stood for re-election in the 1963 General Election but was defeated.

She later retired to Victoria where she died on 14 August 1997.
