Memorable Manitobans: Jennie Marion Slawinski Hayka (1927-2016)

Educator.

Born at Ruda, Poland on 28 November 1927, daughter of Katherine Kiljan (1897-1985) and Karl Slawinski (1893-1969), she immigrated to Canada with her family via Pier 21 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, and they settled at McCreary in 1929.

She graduated from the Manitoba Teachers’ College (1951) and began her 37½-year career in education at Arnes South School (1951-1952) before teaching elsewhere in rural Manitoba during the 1950s. The balance, and majority, of her career was served within the River East School Division, including at East St. Paul School No. 1 / Dr. F. W. L. Hamilton School (1959-1964), Birds Hill School (1964-1968, Principal 1967-1968), and John Pritchard School (?-?), the last of which she retired from.

She married Steve Hayka (1921-2012), whom she met while working at Arnes South School, and they had two daughters: Susan Joyce Hayka (1955-1975) and Patty Lynn Mary Hayka.

She died on 30 November 2016 and her cremains were interred in the Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Church Cemetery near Arnes.
