Memorable Manitobans: Robert Owen “Bob” Harwood (1919-2010)

Architect.

Born at Winnipeg on 9 November 1919, son of Owen Samuel Harwood (1887-1961) and Ethel May Jackson (1892-1991), he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force (1942-1946) then attended the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1952 with a degree in Architecture and a gold medal.

His 42-year architectural career was with the firm of Smith Carter Partners. He was the project architect on many significant Winnipeg buildings, including Centennial Concert Hall, the Planetarium, the Museum of Man and Nature, the Pan Am Pool, the Monarch Life Building, and the Fairmount Hotel and concourse at Portage and Main. He spent two years (1978-1980) in Moscow, Russia supervising construction of the Canadian embassy there.

On 30 May 1947, he married Mabel George at St. John's United Church and they had two sons and a daughter. He served on the boards for the Western Canada Aviation Museum and Westworth United Church, and was a member the Masons (Scottish Rite) and Khartum Shriners.

He died at the Grace Hospital on 29 November 2010.
