Memorable Manitobans: Lloyd Levan “Van” Hall (1939-2007)

Accountant.

Born at Toronto, Ontario on 27 May 1939 to Beatrice Elizabeth Helen Wright (1911-2000) and Lloyd Levan Hall (1907-1987), he grew up there and after high school entered a chartered accountancy program, completing his studies over five travel-filled years in various locales. In 1965, he married public health nurse Susan Estelle Durnford Pringle (1942-2016) and they went on to have two children. He worked initially in the private sector before moving with his wife to St. John’s, Newfoundland to teach at Memorial University.

The couple then joined Canadian University Students Overseas (CUSO) and moved to Tanzania, where he worked as controller for the National Development Corporation and helped implement the country’s first professional accountancy program that he himself had designed. Upon returning to Canada in 1975, the family settled in Winnipeg, and he joined the Communities Economic Development Fund (CEDF) as Treasurer and Assistant General Manager.

In 1978 he entered public practice at Hall Molgat Public Accountants, where he remained until semi-retirement in 2004. He continued to teach through the New Careers Program and the Faculty of Continuing Education at the University of Manitoba. He also undertook development work in Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean, and served on the boards of both public institutions, such as the Manitoba Lotteries Commission and Flyer Industries, and various not-for-profit organizations—North-South Institute, Assiniboine Credit Union, Oxfam, and Klinic Community Health Centre.

In 2003 he was elected a Fellow of the Manitoba Chartered Accountants Institute for outstanding service to the profession and the community. During his public practice career, he worked very closely with numerous Indigenous communities and organizations, providing financial services and training to students. Shortly before his death, he was inducted into the Order of the Buffalo Hunt in recognition of his community service.

He died at Winnipeg on 11 August 2007. Because of his role as Vice-Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation (2000-2007), the organization created the Lloyd LeVan Hall Memorial Scholarship that assists Indigenous students pursuing post-secondary education in the Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba.
