Memorable Manitobans: Geoffrey Cameron Griffin (1893-1965)

Grain merchant.

Born at Woodstock, Ontario on 19 March 1893, son of A. D. Griffin and Ida Cameron, he completed his education at the Galt Collegiate Institute. In 1911 he moved to Winnipeg with his family and began working for the British America Elevator Company. During the First World War, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in December 1914 and went overseas with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. Receiving a head wound in early 1915, and with a partially paralyzed right leg, he was declared medically unfit for duty and was shipped home.

He returned to Winnipeg and worked for the N. Bawlf Grain Company, rising to become its Vice-President and manager of the company’s terminal elevator. When N. Bawlf was bought by the Alberta Pacific Rain Company in December 1940, he continued working for the new owners. In September 1943, he succeeded W. C. Folliott as the eastern sales manager for the Alberta Wheat Pool, based in Winnipeg. He was a long-time member of the Winnipeg Grain Exchange and served for five years on its Board of Governors.

He was married twice, first on 7 January 1919 to Kathleen Esther Bawlf (1895-1938, daughter of Nicholas Bawlf) at Winnipeg. They had no children. He later married nurse Dorothy Jean Griffin (?-1986). He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 12 May 1965 and his cremains were buried in the St. John’s Cathedral Cemetery.
