Memorable Manitobans: Emma Idea Scheibe Gilchrist (1917-2004)

Educator, historian.

Born in the Rural Municipal of Montcalm on 25 April 1917, daughter of Kurt Eugene Scheibe (1879-1950) and Franziska Hauta (1878-1943), she became a teacher, serving as the Principal of Ridgeville School (1944-1945) and Minto School (1945-1946). She married Nelson Andrew Gilchrist (1911-2005) and they had three children. They retired to Winnipeg in 1967 where she wrote Pages from Ridgeville’s Story, a history of the Ridgeville district. She died at Winnipeg on 20 July 2004.
