Memorable Manitobans: Piero Gamba (1936-2022)

Musician.

Born at Rome, Italy on 16 September 1936, his abilities as a pianist were recognized at an early age. He came to Winnipeg in 1971 as Music Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. In recognition of his community service, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal (1977). He resigned in 1980 after a dispute over finances with members of the orchestra’s board but received a City of Winnipeg Community Service Award at his farewell concert. He later conducted in Australia and Uruguay, eventually using New York City as his base for guest conducting performances, including in Winnipeg in 1986. He died at New York on 30 January 2022.
