Memorable Manitobans: John “Ion” Ferguson (1908-1998)

Motion picture executive.

Born at Glasgow, Scotland on 20 September 1908, he came to Winnipeg in 1910 and lived in St. James for the rest of his life. He began as a film projectionist for silent films in 1926, working his way up through the sound era to become district supervisor of theatres for Famous Players for the Prairie region and northwestern Ontario in 1954. He retired in 1973 to operate the Delta Drive-In Theatre in Portage la Prairie, which he did until 1992. He died at Winnipeg on 6 November 1998.
