Memorable Manitobans: David Favor (1919-2016)

Businessman, community activist.

Born at Vancouver, British Columbia on 6 August 1919, his life took a formative turn when he and his brother Morris Favor were sent to a Jewish Orphanage in Winnipeg. Their mother, Rachel Weinberg, had immigrated from Austria and found herself unable to raise four boys alone. Despite these early challenges, he flourished in the community, attending Luxton School, Machray School, and St. John’s High School. He sang in the choir and played the saxophone and trombone. As a teenager, he played hockey with the Aleph Zadik Aleph.

Following high school, he found a job at the Empire News and Tobacco Shop, where he earned $5 for a 75-hour work week. After, he worked at Canada Motor Products selling telephones. He later served as a shipper at National Jewelry and Importing, where he met his future wife, Nettie Fogel (1920-2003). The two got married on 26 June 1942 and subsequently had two daughters. They launched a business, Favor Industries, in 1948. It became a national success, selling sculptures across Canada that were designed by Nettie and brought to life by professional sculptors.

He was a committed philanthropist who spent his life giving back to the Jewish community and various health organizations. After a long and impactful life, he passed away at the Riverview Health Centre on 26 April 2016. He was buried at the B’nay Abraham Cemetery.
