Memorable Manitobans: Jean Ellis (1879-1972)

Educator.

Born in Ontario on 12 July 1879, one of six children of Charles Ellis and Isabella MacNab, sister of Isabel Ellis, she came to Winnipeg with her family at the age of two. After teaching at Dominion City School (1898-1900), in 1902 she joined the teaching staff of the Winnipeg School Board, spending nine years at Argyle School. She taught at Greenway School from 1911 to 1914, when she was appointed the first Principal of Earl Grey School. She transferred to Gladstone School in 1919 where she remained until retirement in 1944. She died at Winnipeg on 5 November 1972 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
