Memorable Manitobans: Bjarni Asgeir “Barney” Egilson (1901-1965)

Insurance broker, municipal official.

Born at Winnipeg on 11 February 1901, son of Egill Egilson and Gudveig Jonsdottir, he moved to Gimli in 1924 and operated a general insurance business.

He served on the council (20 years) and Mayor (1946-1961) of Gimli. During his term, much of the town's waterworks and sewer system was installed. He was also a member of the Municipal Advisory Board and Betel Home Foundation. In 1953, he received the Order of the Falcon from the Icelandic government. He and wife Rooney (?-?) had no children. He was a member of the Icelandic National League, Gimli Old Timers Association, and Community Cemetery Association.

He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 27 February 1965 and was buried in the Gimli Cemetery.
