Memorable Manitobans: Muriel Winnifred Chapman Cuthbert (1916-2007)

Community activist.

Born at Winnipeg on 30 December 1916 to Lottie Lawrence (1879-1962) and Samuel Chapman (1883-1978), her first job as a teenager was in the Eaton’s department store’s candy kitchen. She then worked for a time at Merchant’s Consolidated, first packing groceries for distribution to retail stores and then as a typist. In 1944 she married Manchester “Chester” Dudley Cuthbert (1912-2009), and they went on to have five children.

Her main activities throughout her life centered on her membership in the Broadway Disciples United Church, earlier called St. James Church of Christ (Disciples), then Home Street Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Besides being devoted to her care of her family, she sewed and knitted for church babies and community children. She served as a member and an officer of the Christian Women’s Fellowship Circle 4, and as Elder, Moderator, and Representative to and President of the Women’s Inter-Church Council of Winnipeg. Her passion was music, and she was a devoted member of the church choir, as soloist for many years and choir director. She also enjoyed being part of the Oriana Singers, later called the The Choristers, a madrigal group founded in Winnipeg by William Henry Anderson in 1936.

She died at Winnipeg on 9 January 2007.
