Stock broker.
Born at Montreal, Quebec on 4 August 1884, son of Robert and Elizabeth Cowans, he was educated at high school then, in 1901, began working as a clerk at Greenshields Limited at Montreal. He came to Winnipeg in 1910 as a partner in the firm of McDougall & Cowans located at 438 Main Street, Winnipeg.
In 1910, he married Doris Forsyth Allan (1888-1920) at Montreal and they had three children: Charlotte Barbara Cowans (1912-1917), Hugh Allan Cowans (1916-1995), and Russell Cowans (1917-1991). The family lived at 260 Wellington Crescent, Winnipeg. He was a member of the Manitoba Club, St. James Club (Montreal), and Presbyterian church. He died in September 1959 and was buried in the Mount Royal Cemetery at Outremond, Quebec.
