Memorable Manitobans: Margaret Theresa Costantini (1911-2008)

Civil servant.

Born at Winnipeg on 29 August 1911, daughter of Charles Comfort Quinn (1881-1926) and Margaret Rose Shannon (?-?), in 1943 she was appointed Private Secretary to Premier Stuart Sinclair Garson, subsequently serving his successors Douglas Lloyd Campbell, Charles Dufferin “Duff” Roblin, and Walter Cox-Smith Weir. In 1970, she became the administrative officer of the executive council in the governments of Edward Richard “Ed” Schreyer and Sterling Rufus Lyon, serving until retirement in 1979.

On 18 September 1943, she married schoolteacher Dominic Enrico Costantini (?-?) at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. They lived at 222 Horace Street and had no children. In recognition of her community service, she received a Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal (1977) and Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002), and was invested into the Order of Canada (1980).

She died at Winnipeg on 14 April 2008.
