Alfred James Cook

Veteran, Indigenous leader.
Born at St. Peters on 9 July 1898, son of Matthew Cook and Mary Kennedy, he spent most of his life at Bloodvein First Nation. During the First World War, he enlisted in January 1917 in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served overseas until 1918. He was a Chief of Bloodvein First Nation for 10 years and President of the Manitoba Indian Brotherhood for five years. In the 1959 provincial general election, he was a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation candidate for the Rupertsland constituency.
On 16 June 1923, he married Isabella ? (1907-2006) at Berens Rivers and they had three sons and seven daughters. At the time of his death, he had 58 grandchildren, 103 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. He died at the Health Sciences Centre on 10 April 1992 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
