Memorable Manitobans: James Ian “Jim” Coghill (1935-2005)Broadcaster. Born on 27 August 1935 to John Robert “Jock” Coghill (1889-1963), who was the founder and first Pipe Major of the Winnipeg Police Pipe Band, and Marjorie Ann Lawley Small (1910-1976), he was raised in North End Winnipeg and attended Faraday School and Isaac Newton School. After working at CN Telegraphs, he began his radio career in the 1950s at CFOB in Fort Frances, Ontario. In the 1960s, he joined CKRC in Winnipeg, and then CKY, where he hosted the program “Man About Midnight.” In 1969, he married Rosalie, and in the 1970s embarked on a 17-year career at CJOB, entertaining radio listeners with such programs as “The Night Owl,” “Midnight Blue,” and “Cog and All That Jazz.” For eight years before he died, he hosted “Cog’s Corner” at CHNR. He had a long-standing relationship with the Winnipeg Press Club’s annual show “Beer & Skits.” He was also involved with the Eric and Jack Wells Foundation, Children's Aid, Schmockey Night, Age and Opportunity, Newsmen’s Bonspiels, and many baseball and curling leagues.
