Memorable Manitobans: Bert Cockburn (1891-?)

Editor and publisher.

Born at West Riding, Yorkshire, England in 1891, son of Henry Herbert Cockburn (1862-1924), he was educated in England. His father came to Canada in 1904 and worked with Stovels Limited at Winnipeg and the Neepawa Press. He moved to Binscarth in 1912 and purchased The Binscarth Express, an eight-page weekly newspaper. After his father's death, he took over as editor and publisher. He was a member of the Canadian Weekly Newspaper Association, Masonic fraternity, and St. Matthew’s Anglican Church. His recreation was chess.
