Memorable Manitobans: Vera Shewchuk Chernecki (c1941-2022)

Nurse, community activist.

Born at Ethelbert around 1941, she grew up on the family farm near Garland. She attended Ethelbert School where she met her future husband Ray Chernecki. They married in 1963 and had four daughters. After high school, she moved to Winnipeg and graduate from the St. Boniface Hospital School of Nursing in 1962. She began a 36-year career in nursing, serving as President of the Manitoba Nurses Union for 17 years. After retirement, she became a professional parliamentarian and advised organizations on operational rules, chaired meetings, and taught at Red River College. In recognition of her community service, she received a 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation Medal (1992) and the Bread and Roses Award from the Canadian Federation of Nurses Union (1995). She died at Winnipeg on 15 July 2022.
