Farmer.
Born at Aberdeen, Scotland on 4 December 1859, son of William Charles and Margaret Burnett, from a young age he worked as a farm hand and fished. He emigrated to Canada in 1884, where he worked in Ontario until 1897 when he came to Manitoba. He homesteaded on a 160-acre farm near Franklin. In 1903 he added to his land holding by purchasing 320 acres in Township 14 of Range 18 near Minnedosa. He also kept cattle and horses. In 1888 he married Susan North. They had nine children: Margaret Charles (wife of Arthur Bedham), William Charles, Harry Charles, Mabel Charles, Roy Charles, Ella Charles, Pearl Charles, and Frederick Charles.
