Memorable Manitobans: Henry Alfred “Hank” Carty (1925-2007)

Rifleman, community activist.

Born in rural Manitoba on 6 September 1925 to Philip and Helena Carty, he moved to Winnipeg in his late teens and served in the Reserve Forces, where his interest in competitive, full-bore target shooting developed.

In 1951, he became a member of the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association (DCRA) and would remain a member until his death. In addition, he was an honourable life member and Governor of the Manitoba Provincial Rifle Association (MPRA), serving on its executive committee beginning in 1958. He held several offices and titles during his life in competitive shooting, including Shooting Commandant of the 1967 Pan-Am Games in Winnipeg; Director of the MPRA Centennial Prize Meet (1972); MPRA Executive Vice-President (1979-1983); MPRA President (1984-1993); DRCA Provincial Vice-President (1984-2005); and Chairman of Rifle Events for the Shooting Federation of Canada Nationals (1993).

He received a number of awards throughout his shooting career, not only for his competitive excellence, but also for his contribution to the sport. Some of these awards include the International Shooting Union Certificate of Merit (1967); a Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal (1977); Manitoba Lieutenant Governor's Gold Medal for top shooter at the province’s annual prize meet (1989); and the MPRA Volunteer Award (1991). He travelled to England for the Bisley Prize Meet in 1981, fulfilling a lifelong goal. In 1984 and 1988, he was a member of the Canadian Rifle team, which travelled and competed extensively throughout New Zealand and Australia. In addition to his involvement with various rifle and shooting associations, he also executed his roles as military team-shooting coach (1953-1957); army cadet coach for the 1226 Fort Garry Horse Cadet Corps (1974-1984); and as a commanding officer for the same unit.

After twenty years in sales, he became self-employed until his retirement in 2000.

He died at Winnipeg on 6 December 2007 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
