Memorable Manitobans: Roper Galloway Cadham (1914-1988)

Physician, medical health officer.

Born at Winnipeg on 27 July 1914, son of Frederick Todd “Fred” Cadham and Nina Elizabeth Galloway (1883-1963), he graduated from the University of Manitoba Medical School in 1938 and served in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Air Force Medical Corps., from January 1941 to October 1945, as a Squadron Leader.

On returning from military service, in 1945 he became employed with the City of Winnipeg, first as a Deputy Medical Health Officer and, in March 1957, as Medical Health Officer. He retired from the position in July 1979.

He was married twice, first to Frances Margaret Cadham (1914-1976) with whom he had a son and two daughters. In 1976, he married Veronica Mary “Ronnie” Redmond (1917-1995). In recognition of his community service, he received a City of Winnipeg Community Service Award (1971).

He died at the Health Sciences Centre on 21 April 1988 and was buried in the St. John's Cathedral Cemetery.
