Store manager.
Born at Sydney, Australia on 16 March 1881, son of journalist Edwin Burton and Sarah L. Roberts, he attended Sydney public schools and later a private school there, quitting school at the age of 17 to work as a clerk and accountant for the Colonial Paper Company. He then worked for two years as a traveler and bookkeeper for George Cradock, a manufacturer of steel rope. He then operated a real estate agency in Sydney for two years, moving afterwards to London, England and working for James Kidd, the London agent for a manuacturing company. He then worked for a mechanical engineer, travelling throughout the British Isles in the interests of the Atlas Lace Paper Company. Four years later, he emigrated to Canada and settled at Brandon, Manitoba. He worked as assistant manager of Warners Limited then manager of the stationery firm of Richardson & Bishop.
On 19 October 1906, he married Ida Chapman of Aukland, New Zealand, at London, England. They had three children: Edwin W. Burton, Verna J. Burton, and Beryl L. Burton. The family resided at 232 Sixteenth Street, Brandon. He served as secretary of the Brandon City Cricket League, vice-president of the Manitoba Cricket Association, and a member of the Brandon Gun Club, and Congregational Church. He was secretary, treasurer, and business manager of the Operatic Society.
