Memorable Manitobans: James Cowan “Jim” Burt (1933-2024)

Pilot, businessman.

Born at Timmins, Ontario on 3 July 1933, youngest of three children of Frederick and Katie Cowan, the family moved to Orillia and later to Brampton, where he graduated from high school. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a fighter pilot and instructor at Cold Lake, Portage la Prairie, Trenton, and Clairsholme. He later worked as a pilot for Trans-Canada Airlines (predecessor to Air Canada) at Montreal.

In 1960, he married Marilyn May (daughter of Joseph Kellaway May) and moved with her to Winnipeg where they had two sons. He joined her father's company, Scott-Bathgate Limited, and in 1971 became its President, holding the position for 52 years. He also served for 30 years as the first Western Canadian director for Equitable Life of Canada.

He died at Winnipeg on 14 March 2024.
