Memorable Manitobans: Vincent Garfield Bruce “Vince” Burr (1920-2009)

Community activist.

Born at Winnipeg on 9 July 1920 to Ethel May Gaffield (1890-1958) and George Henry Bruce Burr (1868-1926), he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force in England, India, and Burma during the Second World War. On 8 December 1945, he married Muriel Martha Todd (1919-2003), with whom he went on to have two children.

In his career, he was a Welfare Officer with the Department of Veterans Affairs. He served as Trustee and Chair of the Board for the Seven Oaks School Division, and as a Director and President of the Adanac Credit Union (later called the Belgian-Alliance Credit Union). He was a founding member and a Director of the Winnipeg One Hundred Club. He served as a Director of the Last Post Fund and, on 16 October 2009, received the Last Post Fund Long Service Medal and Bar from the Honourable Philip S. Lee, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. He volunteered with the Christmas Cheer Board for many years, assisting in various positions, was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion (West Kildonan Branch), and a member of Rivercrest United Church.

He was also a sportsman. In his youth, he played basketball for Daniel McIntyre Collegiate and St. Andrew’s College. He enjoyed curling, fishing, and golf, and was a supporter of the Winnipeg Jets. He was a founding member and a President of the West St. Paul Curling Club, an Honorary Life Member of the Manitoba Curling Association, and Past President of the Association of Manitoba Curling Clubs. He enjoyed fishing with friends at lakes in northern and southern Manitoba and played golf at courses around Winnipeg.

He died at Winnipeg on 12 November 2009 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
