Memorable Manitobans: Julius Buriak (1910-1965)

Educator, lawyer.

Born at Shamokin, Pennsylvania in 1910, he was a professional baseball player in Pennsylvania before coming to Canada in 1930. He obtained a teaching certificate at the Brandon Normal School and attended the Winnipeg Branch of the Peter Mohyla Ukrainian Institute. He taught for some years at Sandilands and other places in southern Manitoba. In 1935, he enrolled at the Manitoba Law School and graduated in 1939. Upon graduation, he joined a law practice with John Salmon Lamont, Wasyl Swystun, and N. Hamilton Layton. He later practiced with Lamont and A. M. Zivot. He was President of the Ukrainian National Youth Federation. He and wife Mary Buriak (?-?) had a daughter and two sons. He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 18 May 1965.
