Memorable Manitobans: Anthony Paul “Tony” Buchner (1950-2018)

Archaeologist.

Born at Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England on 26 September 1950, son of Josef Buchner and Muriel Savill, he immigrated to Winnipeg in 1955. He received a BA degree from the University of Winnipeg, MA degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and PhD in Archaeology from the University of Calgary. He worked at the University of Winnipeg and the Manitoba Historic Resources Branch, studying the pre-contact life of Indigenous peoples on the prairies. He was later a Project Officer for the Manitoba Geographic Names Program and assisted in the preparation of two books, Geographical Names of Manitoba (2000) and A Place of Honour: Manitoba's War Dead Commemorated in its Geography (2005). He died at Winnipeg on 2 June 2018.
