Memorable Manitobans: Norman Brown (1873-1956)

Building contractor.

Born at Owen Sound, Ontario in September 1872, he came to Manitoba in 1899 and worked as a building contractor, in partnership with Rupert Joshua Barker, in the firm of Brown and Barker until retirement in 1941.

He and wife Mary Hunter McArthur (1872-1960) had four children: Anna Gillies Brown (1901-1984, wife of Thomas H. Ridyard and Bob Johnson), Laura Lang Brown (1903-?, wife of Robert Campbell Brown), Iyla May Brown (1905-?, wife of Campbell Alexander Ward), and William “Bill” Brown (1914-?). The family lived at 500 Clifton Street (c1931) and 590 Home Street (c1956). He was a member of Home Street United Church and later Harstone United Church.

He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 27 January 1956 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
