Memorable Manitobans: Fred Brick (1935-2016)

Businessman.

Born at Winnipeg on 11 September 1935, son of Philip Brick (c1894-1984) and Ida Brick (c1897-1963), he grew up in the city’s North End above his parents’ fruit store. In 1969, he founded a furniture business with his wife Cynthia and operated it until near his death. Over a five-year period, he litigated and eventually prevailed against a national furniture chain with a similar-sounding name that wanted him to change the name of his business. For 20 years, he wrote a weekly column in the Winnipeg Free Press. He died at Winnipeg on 4 July 2016.
