Memorable Manitobans: Uberta Margaret Ellen Ross Blackburn (1914-1996)

Community activist.

Born at Clanwilliam on 4 January 1914, daughter of Elizabeth Hazel Young (1877-1980) and Richard Rose Ross (?-?), she was educated at Angusville, Rossburn, and Winnipeg, and obtained a teaching certificate from the Central Normal School. She worked for several years at the Western Glove Company and managed the Peikoff Medical Clinic. She retired in 1967.

On 25 May 1942, she married Arthur Stanley Woods Blackburn (1912-1985) at Winnipeg. They had no children. Active in provincial politics, she was a Progressive Conservative candidate for the Logan constituency in the 1962 provincial general election. In 1963, she succeeded Kathleen Josephine Vanstone “Kay” Russenholt on the Liquor Licensing Board and served until 1969. She was President of the Fort Garry Ladies Curling Club and Strathcona Business Girls, and a member of Knox United Church. In recognition of her community service, she received a 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation Medal (1992).

She died on 5 February 1996 and was buried in the Garry Memorial Park.
