Born at Emerson, Manitoba on 31 August 1887, son of James Joseph Bedford and Saloma Helena Studer, he graduated with a medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1912. During the First World War he served on the staff of Ramsgate Hospital from 1916 to 1917 and later established a medical practice in Winnipeg, specializing in skin ailments. He did postgraduate work in London, England in 1926 and, two years later, was appointed a demonstrator in therapeutic medicine in the Faculty of Medicine. He became a lecturer in the subject two years later. On 24 November 1915, he married Mary Esther Locke, daughter of Corbet Locke. He died suddenly, at Winnipeg, on 6 January 1944.
