Memorable Manitobans: James Edward Bailey (1873-1946)

Building contractor.

Born at Beaverton, Ontario in 1873, son of William Bailey (?-?) and Phoebe Josephine Bailey (?-1945), he came to Winnipeg in 1897 and operated the Bailey Supply Company, a farm implement supply firm, until he sold it to the Prairie City Oil Company. He operated the Rialto Theatre and later the National Theatre on Fort Street before turning to building construction. He and wife Annie Fraser (1874-1950) had two sons, William Clifford Bailey (1899-1959) and ? Bailey (1905-1905). He was a St. Boniface alderman (1908-1910, 1912). He died at his Norwood residence, 210 Lawndale Avenue, on 25 June 1946 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
