Memorable Manitobans: Walter Beavin Axford (1862-?)

Insurance agent.

Born at Bowmanville, Ontario on 19 November 1862, son of William and Elizabeth Axford, he completed his education at the age of 18 then taught school for two years then came to Manitoba in 1883 and worked for five years on the Canadian Pacific Railway. He established a general store at Glenboro then, four years later, opened an insurance agency at Belmont, representing the Great Western Life Insurance Company. On 28 April 1892, he married Annie Maria Cook at Glenboro. He was a member of the Masons and the IOOF.
