Ceramic artist.
Born at Toledo, Ohio on 18 April 1933, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1949 and served in the Mediterranean, North Africa, and Turkey. After leaving the military, he lived in Mexico and California before returning to Ohio where he received a BFA degree from Bowling Green State University. He obtained a Masters degree (1964) from Alfred University in New York and taught for four years at the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1968, he moved to Winnipeg where, inspired by the pottery traditions of Japan, Korea, and China, he taught ceramics in the School of Art at the University of Manitoba until retirement in 1991. In recognition of his excellence in teaching and research, he was made a Professor Emeritus (2004), received a Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts (2003), a lifetime achievement award from the National Countil on Education for the Ceramic Arts (2008), and an Award of Distinction from the Manitoba Arts Council (2014). He died at Winnipeg on 25 April 2022.
