Memorable Manitobans: Charles Daniel Anderson (1829-1914)Merchant. Born in Sweden in 1829, he went to Chicago in 1851 and moved to Fort Garry in 1872, where for three years he operated boats on the Red River between Breckenridge, Minnesota and Fort Garry, thus acquiring the nickname of “Flatboat” Anderson. Later he went into the grocery trade. In 1889, he married Caroline S. Johnston. They had no children. He was the first Grand Master of the IOOF. He died at his Winnipeg home, 258 Hugo Street, on 27 July 1914 and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery. Sources:“Manitoba’s first grand master dead”, Manitoba Free Press, 27 July 1914.
