Memorable Manitobans: Charles Davis “Flatboat” Anderson (1829-1914)

Merchant.

Born in Sweden in 1829, he went to Chicago in 1851 and moved to Fort Garry in 1872, where for three years he operated boats on the Red River between Breckenridge, Minnesota and Fort Garry, thus acquiring his nickname. Later he went into the grocery trade. On 11 September 1889, he married Caroline Sophie “Carrie” Johnston (1850-1921) at Winnipeg. They had no children. He was the first Grand Master of the IOOF (1884-1885). He died at his Winnipeg home, 258 Hugo Street, on 27 July 1914 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
