Florence Loreen McRae Amann

Community activist.
Born at Winnipeg on 19 September 1928, eldest of three children of Wilhamina “Minnie” Deas (1910-1987) and John Alexander McRae (1869-1962), she was raised on the family farm near Katrime. She attended Squirrel Creek School and worked briefly at the Eaton’s department store in Winnipeg.
On 19 June 1954, she married Fredolin “Fred” Amann (1930-2022) and moved to Austin where she raised three children and was the community postmistress (1972-1993). Active in the community, she helped to develop the Austin Figure Skating Club, coached girls’ fastball, and was an avid curler. She served on numerous committees, including the Austin and Area Leisure Centre, TOPS, Manitoba Society of Seniors, Central Plains Senior Council, Manitoba Senior Games, Austin Cemetery Committee, and Katrime Cemetery Committee.
She helped to fundraise for a covered skating rink in the 1960s, to install a floor shuffleboard in the senior centre in the 2000s, and a build a new community hall in 2008-2009. She was active as the Austin Cemetery supervisor. In recognition of her service, she received an Achievement Award from the Manitoba Council of Aging. She died suddenly at her Austin home on 7 April 2017 and was buried in the Austin Cemetery.
