Memorable Manitobans: Nello Altomare (c1963-2025)

Educator, MLA (2019-2023), MLA (2023-2025).

Born around 1963 to Italian immigrants, he was a teacher in the Transcona-Springfield School Division and River East Transcona School Division and served as the Principal of Polson School (2014-?).

He was elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly in the 2019 general election and was re-elected in 2023. He was Minister of Education and Early Childhood Learning (2023-2024). He oversaw the development and implementation of Canada’s first universal school food program.

In recognition of his community service, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (2022).

He died at Winnipeg on 14 January 2025.
