Memorable Manitobans: Herbert Curtis Allen (1925-2012)

Community activist.

Born at Winnipeg on 8 March 1925, his childhood was spent in West Kildonan. He played with jazz bands to earn money for flying lessons and, at the age of 16, he became the youngest licensed pilot in Canada. He continued to fly into his 70s. His interest in the outdoors led to involvement with the Manitoba Game and Fish Association, and he hosted an outdoor program on television. He worked in the fish business for most of his career, living at one point in The Pas where he managed a fish station. He invented a net rule as a tool for measuring fish nets and he pioneered the use of tinted nets and more humane trap nets. He led the sale of Manitoba fish in Europe and Japan. He and wife Alice had two daughters and a son. He died at Winnipeg on 18 September 2012.
