Memorable Manitobans: Valdis Martins “Val” Alers (1924-1988)

Architect.

Born in Latvia in 1924, he came to Canada from England in 1949. He attended the University of Manitoba, receiving a degree in Architecture and a Gold Medal. He worked as a draftsman for the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation for over a decade, starting in 1957, before completing graduate studiess at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1959.

Returning to Winnipeg, he joined the architectural firm of Smith Carter where he was a design architect for 11 years. His designs included the Manitoba Telephone System Administration Building (1960-1962), the Fine Arts and Music buildings at the University of Manitoba (1964-1965) and the Canadian Chancery at Warsaw, Poland (1970). He left the company in 1970 to teach at North Dakota State University and the University of Manitoba until 1976, and was later employed by Public Works Canada, during which he designed the Health Protection Laboratory (1988).

He died suddenly at Winnipeg on 2 September 1988. He was survived by a wife and three children.
