Born at Winnipeg on 20 March 1912, son of Aaron Akman and Sarah Ida Kaplan (1884-1921), his first job was in the garment industry then he worked as a public adjuster before joining his father in the firm of A. Akman and Son. They built houses and apartment buildings around the city.
Under his leadership, the company grew impressively, constructing industrial buildings, factories, shopping centres, and condominiums. In recognition of his fine work, he received a City of Winnipeg Community Service Award in 1988. His crowning achievement was serving as project manager for construction of the Asper Jewish Community Campus.
On 6 November 1938, he married Beatrice Rebecca “Betty” Wolch (1916-2008) and they had a daughter and three sons, including Richard Akman.
He died at Winnipeg on 21 September 1996.
