Memorable Manitobans: Raphael Louis “Ray” Zengel (1894-1977)

War hero, farmer.

Born at Faribault, Minnesota on 11 November 1894, son of Mary J. Zengel, he moved with his widowed mother to Saskatchewan at an early age. He was working on a farm at Virden when, in July 1915, he enlisted in the 45th Battalion. In 1917 he won a Victoria Cross for bravery at Warvillers. After the war he moved to Alberta and later British Columbia. During the Second World War he served as a regimental Sergeant Major. He died at Nanaimo, British Columbia on 25 February 1977.
