Lionel John Wright

Farmer, community activist.
Born near Austin on 11 May 1924, third son of James Wright (1889-1938) and Elizabeth Margaret Lawrence (1893-1975), he attended Forestville School and Sidney School. On 18 December 1948, he married Nellie Jones and they had a daughter and two sons. The family farmed in the Forestville School district.
Active in the community, he was a leader for the Sidney 4-H Beef Club (1959-1971), a director and President for the local association of Manitoba Pool Elevators (30 years), a trustee for the Austin School Board, an active member of the Austin and Area Lions Club for many years, and a director of the Central Plains Development Board for 22 years and the Central Plains Better Business Development Centre. In recognition of his service, he received a 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation Medal from Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn (1992).
He died at the Brandon General Hospital on 21 December 2010 and was buried in the Austin Cemetery.
