Memorable Manitobans: William John “Billy” Wood (1883-1962)
Businessman, property manager, municipal official.
Born in the Rural Municipality of Rockwood on 12 December 1883, son of Archibald Smart Wood and Catherine Campbell (1852-?), he moved to Winnipeg Beach and invested in property, opened a garage, sold insurance, rented cabins, served as a Councillor (1909-1910), and was the first Mayor of Winnipeg Beach (1910-1912). On 19 September 1908, he married Janet Sophia Cumming (1888-1928) at Winnipeg and they adopted a daughter, Betty. He later remarried Janet’s sister Isabelle Cumming (?-?) on 5 November 1929 in Old Kildonan, with whom he had five children: Annabel Wood (wife of Gordon Walterson), Cordelea Wood (wife of T. M. Gardiner), Islay May Wood (wife of Mr. Montgomery), William John Wood, and Samuel James Wood. He died at the St. Boniface Sanatorium on 29 September 1962 with burial in the Windsor Cemetery.
